Nagpur crime branch raids 18 spots, seizes goods worth Rs 30.5 lakh
A two-day crackdown across Nagpur targeted banned kite string, gambling, illegal liquor, weapons and vehicle theft, with 21 accused named.
Tightening its grip on illegal activities and crime in Nagpur city, the crime branch carried out raids at 18 locations across different parts of the city on September 8 and 9. Action was taken against 21 accused, including absconding accused, and property worth more than Rs 30.5 lakh was seized.
The entire operation was carried out under the supervision of DCP (Crime Branch) Deepak Agrawal. Police targeted absconding accused in cases involving banned nylon kite string, gambling, illegal liquor, illegal weapons, vehicle theft, parts of stolen vehicles and house-breaking.
Acting on a tip-off in the Yashodhara Nagar area, the Social Security team and the Anti Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) seized 180 pieces of banned mono kite nylon string, valued at around Rs 5.40 lakh. Police also seized an e-rickshaw worth Rs 1.20 lakh, a Suzuki moped worth Rs 75,000 and a mobile phone, taking the total value of seized goods in this case to Rs 7.45 lakh. One accused was booked in the case, while Faizan Ansari was declared an absconding accused.
In the Kapil Nagar area, the Anti Vehicle Theft team seized 30 to 40 engines and other spare parts of different vehicles. Police said the seized goods are worth around Rs 30 lakh. A truck bearing registration number MH-40-BG-4937 was also seized.
In the Beltarodi area, a passenger bus theft case was also solved. The Anti Vehicle Theft team took two accused into custody and recovered a Tata mini-bus. In the Gittikhadan area, Unit 6 of the crime branch caught an absconding accused in a house-breaking case and recovered silver jewellery worth around Rs 16,000 from him.
As part of the drive against gambling, raids were conducted at five locations in Ranpratap Nagar, Sakkardara, Sadar, Hudkeshwar and Nandanvan, in which six people were booked and cash along with gambling material was seized. In addition, five separate actions were taken against the illegal sale of liquor in Sakkardara, Gittikhadan, Khaparkheda, Kapil Nagar and a few other areas.
Two accused found in possession of illegal weapons were arrested in the Wadi and Imamwada areas, and iron knives were recovered from them. In the Lakadganj area, two preventive actions were also taken under Section 122(a) of the Maharashtra Police Act based on suspicious activity.
The ongoing crime branch drive makes clear that police are tightening the noose on illegal activities and crime in the city. Police have said that action against crime and illegal trade will be intensified further in the coming days.
