Nagpur cop held for taking Rs 20,000 bribe at police station

A police head constable posted at Jaripatka police station in Nagpur was caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000. The action was carried out inside the police station premises itself.

The accused head constable has been identified as Sachin Manikrao Tayde. Another policeman posted at the same station, Manish Uttam Meshram, is also accused of being involved in the case and is said to be currently absconding.

According to the ACB, a non-cognizable case had been registered at Jaripatka police station against a 23-year-old man. The two policemen had demanded Rs 40,000 from him in exchange for helping him in that case.

After negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs 20,000. When the man was unwilling to pay the bribe, he contacted the ACB and lodged a complaint.

After verifying the complaint, the ACB laid a trap at the Jaripatka police station itself. The entire operation was carried out in the presence of panch witnesses in a room on the first floor of the police station where the accused was based.

The ACB alleges that Tayde and Meshram together took the Rs 20,000 bribe from the complainant. Tayde is alleged to have subsequently removed the bribe money from the spot.

The ACB has begun further investigation to establish the separate roles of the two policemen.

During the trap, Tayde reportedly fell ill, following which he was admitted to Mayo Hospital for treatment.

Manish Uttam Meshram is currently said to be absconding, and efforts are on to trace him.

A case has been registered against the accused, and the ACB is carrying out further investigation into the bribery case.
