Nagpur head constable caught taking Rs 20,000 bribe by ACB

A team from the Anti-Corruption Bureau, or ACB, caught a head constable at Nagpur's Jaripatka police station red-handed while he was accepting a bribe. The action has caused a stir in the city police department. The head constable who was caught has been identified as Sachin Tayde.

Tayde and his team were responsible for acting on non-cognisable, or NC, cases registered at the police station. A person had filed a complaint against someone at Jaripatka police station, based on which an NC case was registered against that person.

In this case, head constable Sachin Tayde first demanded a bribe of Rs 40,000 in exchange for giving relief to the complainant, taking no further action and helping suppress the matter. The complainant did not have such a large sum, so he pleaded with Tayde extensively. After lengthy negotiation, Tayde finally agreed to accept Rs 20,000.

However, the complainant did not want to pay this amount, so he directly contacted the Anti-Corruption Bureau and lodged a complaint about the entire matter. The ACB team first carried out a confidential verification of the bribe demand as per procedure, in which the allegation was found to be true. Following this, on Wednesday night, Sachin Tayde called the complainant with the bribe amount directly to the Jaripatka police station itself.

The ACB team had already laid a trap at the Jaripatka police station premises. At around 10 pm, as soon as the complainant handed over the Rs 20,000 to head constable Sachin Tayde, the ACB team, which was standing ready, caught him on the spot.

Sachin Tayde, who used to sit at a table at Jaripatka police station and register legal cases against others, has now been taken into custody at the same police station, with a case registered against him under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. It is being said that this is the first such successful ACB trap on a policeman in the Nagpur city police department in a long time, which has once again raised serious questions about the working of the department.
