A gruesome case has emerged from the Beltola area of Guwahati, Assam, where 24 year old Ria Talukdar Goswami was brutally murdered by her own husband. Police say an attempt was made to dispose of the body after the murder, and statements the accused made during questioning left investigators stunned. The accused, Ramanuj Goswami, has been arrested.

Ria and Ramanuj were married on September 22 last year. For the past six months the couple had been living in a flat on Bashistha Basistapur by-lane number 4 in Beltola. Ramanuj works as a cab driver.

According to police, Ramanuj suspected his wife of having an illicit relationship with someone else. This led to a bitter quarrel between the two on September 3, which continued until the next morning. Police allege that during this quarrel, Ramanuj killed Ria with a sharp weapon in a fit of rage. Ria's family had no contact with her for two days, after which they informed the police. A team from Hatigaon police station reached the flat at around 9:45 pm. The door was open, and inside, police found Ria's blood-soaked body.

Investigation revealed that Ria's head had been severed from her body. The severed head was found wrapped in a black plastic bag and kept in the fridge. It also emerged that her fingers had been cut off. Police have seized the sharp weapon called a "dao" that was used in the murder. Questioning also revealed that the accused had planned to feed the body to a dog, though it has not been officially confirmed whether parts of the body were actually fed to a dog. DCP Tabu Ram Pegu said all these aspects are still under investigation.

Questioning also revealed that Ramanuj is addicted to drugs and has been admitted to de-addiction centres more than 20 times. Medical examination also found that he is infected with HIV and Hepatitis C.

Ramanuj surrendered to police himself after the murder. During questioning, he said he had no regret for what he had done. Police said he also threatened that once he was out of jail, he would target a person connected to his wife. A local court has remanded Ramanuj to seven days of police custody. Teams from the CID, forensics and fingerprint experts are collecting evidence from the crime scene. Police are investigating the full motive behind the murder and other aspects of the case in depth.
