Iran foreign minister arrives in Beijing amid tensions with US, China urges restraint

War-like conditions in the Middle East are worsening by the day, and tensions worldwide are deepening. Amid this growing confrontation, Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in the Chinese capital, Beijing. China appears to be stepping in as a mediator to help end the sharp standoff between the United States and Iran as soon as possible.

In Beijing, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi held crucial bilateral talks with Iranian foreign minister Abbas Araghchi. During the meeting, China appealed to both countries to give up an aggressive stance and take the path of peace.

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi issued a clear warning to both Washington and Tehran, saying, "The continuing confrontation between the United States and Iran is not in the interest of either side. Both countries need to act with wisdom and restraint given the extremely sensitive situation." China specifically stressed that areas such as the Red Sea and Yemen should also be kept away from the heat of this confrontation, so that tensions in the region do not increase further.

Wang Yi appealed to the United States and Iran to begin meaningful and positive talks on pending issues. Referring to the memorandum of understanding (MOU) reached earlier in Islamabad, China said both countries need to return to the framework of talks set out under that agreement. It was the collapse of an earlier peace agreement in the Middle East that gave rise to the current instability, China said, adding that concrete steps must be taken to restore peace by recognising the seriousness of the earlier agreement.

This is the Iranian foreign minister's second visit to China since the war with the United States began. He had earlier visited China in May, ahead of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Coincidentally, Araghchi's current visit is also taking place just days before a summit between Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in Washington. This is why the world is watching closely to see what stance China takes in this confrontation.

Araghchi and Wang Yi had also met last week during the BRICS summit in New Delhi. At that meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping had appealed to the Global South BRICS countries to play a peacekeeping role in the Middle East war. Jinping had made clear that China was fully ready to support this peace effort. This is why Araghchi's visit to Beijing, coming right after the BRICS platform, is being seen as diplomatically significant.

China is trying to present itself as an impartial and neutral mediator in this conflict. But looking at the political and economic equations, China is Iran's largest economic partner in the world. China buys a large share of the crude oil Iran exports. This is why keeping Iran's economy stable is important for China's own energy security.

Iranian foreign minister Araghchi will depart from Beijing after completing this visit, but the trip is expected to increase diplomatic pressure on Washington. Whether the confrontation between the United States and Iran moves towards a peace agreement or takes a more aggressive turn in the coming days will become clear only as events unfold.
