BRICS leaders arrive in Delhi, Jinping to reach on Saturday afternoon

Preparations are complete in Delhi for the BRICS summit being hosted by India. Chinese President Xi Jinping will arrive in Delhi on Saturday (the 12th) afternoon. During the visit, Jinping will also hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several other guest leaders, including from Indonesia, the Philippines and the African nation of Nigeria, have already reached India.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said the BRICS grouping stands today at an important turning point amid major shifts in the global economy, changes in trade practices, rapid technological progress and the climate crisis. He described this as a golden opportunity to build a more flexible, diverse and inclusive economic future for the 'Global South', or developing nations. According to Ramaphosa, current global conditions are forcing countries and companies worldwide to reconsider where they buy goods, where they manufacture, and where they invest.

Ramaphosa further said this moment gives BRICS countries an opportunity to move beyond old economic boundaries. According to him, the goal of BRICS nations should not merely be to increase mutual trade, but also to build deeper and more productive ties between their economies.

He also said developing nations should not remain merely exporters of raw materials or buyers of finished goods. So far, technological development and higher-value production in the global value chain have remained limited to a select few countries. According to Ramaphosa, the expanded BRICS grouping should avoid repeating this old pattern. He recalled that during South Africa's first BRICS chairmanship in 2013, the BRICS Business Council was established so that economic cooperation would not remain limited to governments alone.

Meanwhile, special preparations have also been made for Russian President Vladimir Putin's stay in Delhi. After confirmation of his arrival, a special culinary arrangement has been made in his honour at a hotel. This includes a special platter of traditional sweets showcasing India's food heritage. Chocolate bonbons made with Indian spices, including cardamom, saffron, rose, ginger and fennel, will also be served.
