Chandrapur police nab man with unlicensed country-made gun

Police carried out a major operation in the Brahmapuri police station area of Chandrapur district between around 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm on Tuesday, September 8. Police had laid a trap near a cremation ground on the road from Mendki to Ganeshpur. During the operation, a man was caught red-handed for illegally possessing an unlicensed country-made gun.

Police recovered from the accused an old, used country-made gun worth around Rs 12,000 and materials used for loading gunpowder. The action has caused alarm among those holding illegal weapons.

According to information received, Sub-Inspector Rekhalal Bhaiyalal Gautam of Brahmapuri police station was patrolling the Mendki police post area with his team in a private vehicle. The team included police constables Ratan Lengure and Sharad Sawsakade, and police sepoys Amol Lonbale, Abhishek Agashe and Shubham Ledange. During the patrol, an informer told them that a man was walking on the Mendki-Ganeshpur road carrying an illegal weapon. On receiving this information, Sub-Inspector Gautam immediately informed Police Inspector Pramod Banbale of Brahmapuri police station, and preparations for the operation began on his instructions.

Police called in two witnesses from the Mendki area, Vaibhav Yashwant Kumbhare and Pradeep Vasudev Gurnule, and began searching for the suspect. On reaching the cremation ground on the Mendki-Ganeshpur road, they spotted a man matching the description given by the informer walking on foot. Police immediately stopped their vehicle, surrounded him and caught him. On questioning, he identified himself as Ambarsingh Bachchansingh Dudhani (40, a labourer, resident of Rupalamendha/Akapur, Brahmapuri tehsil, Chandrapur district).

A search conducted in front of the witnesses recovered a large country-made gun with a wooden and iron barrel. When asked about a licence, it emerged he had no authorised permit. The seized gun is about 132 centimetres long, comprising an 87-centimetre wooden body, a 91-centimetre iron barrel with an 8-centimetre girth, an iron hammer, a trigger and an 89-centimetre iron rod used for ramming gunpowder.

For illegally possessing a lethal weapon without a licence, police prepared a panchnama in front of the witnesses, seized all the material and arrested the accused, Ambarsingh Dudhani. On a complaint by Sub-Inspector Rekhalal Gautam, a case numbered 0700 was registered against the accused at Brahmapuri police station under Sections 3 and 25 of the Arms Act, 1959. Further investigation has been handed to Sub-Inspector Dhanraj Omanrao Shelokar, who is trying to establish where the accused got the weapon from and for what purpose he was keeping it.
