Smelly shoes and socks in monsoon? Three home remedies that help
Vinegar, talcum powder and proper sun-drying can fight the sweat-and-bacteria odour that builds up in shoes and socks during the rains.
Smelly shoes and socks are common during the monsoon, and the odour can often become a source of embarrassment. Wearing socks and shoes all day makes feet sweat, and it is the bacteria that grow in this sweat that are actually responsible for the bad smell. Many people wash their shoes and socks repeatedly, yet the smell does not go away. Even after washing with soap, the odour tends to linger in some form. A few simple kitchen hacks can help solve this problem, cutting down on the need to wash socks again and again while keeping them fresh.
The first method is using vinegar. If you are troubled by smelly socks and washing repeatedly is not solving the problem, spray vinegar on the socks and leave them for a while. This removes the odour from the socks, allowing them to be worn without hesitation.
The second remedy is talcum powder. If talcum powder is available at home, it can easily help remove the smell from shoes or socks. Before wearing socks, sprinkle talcum powder on the soles of the feet. It is believed that this powder helps keep sweat, odour and bacteria at bay.
The third method is drying socks thoroughly in the sun. To avoid odour, it helps to dry socks in strong sunlight. Socks should never be worn on wet feet, as this can increase the smell further and allow bacteria to build up on the soles of the feet. Socks should therefore first be dried well in strong sunlight or open air before being worn.
A few other things are also worth keeping in mind. People who sweat a lot from their feet should wear cotton socks and avoid synthetic ones. Socks should also be replaced every three to four months. To get rid of the odour completely, washing socks regularly is also necessary.
