Baleno facelift vs Fronx: which Maruti Suzuki hatchback offers more

Maruti Suzuki's two well-known models, the Baleno facelift and the Fronx, now come in nearly the same price range in the Indian market. At Delhi ex-showroom prices, the Baleno facelift starts at Rs 5.99 lakh, while the Fronx starts at Rs 6.85 lakh. Both cars are built on the same HEARTECT platform, but there is a considerable difference in their body design, engine options and top-variant pricing. The Baleno's top model goes up to Rs 9.99 lakh, while the Fronx's top model reaches Rs 11.98 lakh. Many buyers are confused about whether to go for a hatchback or a crossover SUV.

The two cars also fall into different categories in terms of looks and size. The Baleno is a classic premium hatchback, while the Fronx has been given a crossover SUV look. The Fronx has a ground clearance of 190mm and a boot space of 308 litres. In terms of length, the Baleno is 3,990mm and the Fronx is 3,995mm, a difference of just 5mm. In width, the Baleno is 1,745mm and the Fronx is 1,765mm, a difference of 20mm. In height too, the Baleno is 1,530mm and the Fronx is 1,550mm, again a 20mm difference. Both cars have the same wheelbase of 2,520mm.

On engines, the Baleno facelift now gets a new Z12E 1.2-litre 3-cylinder engine that generates 83hp of power and 112Nm of torque. In the automatic (AMT) variant, the car claims a mileage of up to 24.77 km per litre. The Fronx offers two engine options. The first is a 1.2-litre K-series naturally aspirated engine that delivers 88hp of power and 113Nm of torque, giving a mileage of 22.89 km per litre in the AMT type. The second is a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol Boosterjet engine that generates 99hp of power and 147.6Nm of torque, and also offers a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox with paddle shifters. This powerful turbo-petrol option is not available in the Baleno.

Both cars also offer a company-fitted CNG option. In the Baleno, CNG is offered only in the Delta and Zeta variants, while in the Fronx it is available in the Sigma and Delta 1.2-litre variants. On features, the new Baleno facelift adds advanced safety features such as Level 2 ADAS and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in this generation. It also gets a head-up display, a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and ventilated front seats. The Fronx, on the other hand, offers a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen, a head-up display, wireless charging, a 360-degree camera and 6 airbags as standard across all variants.

Which car is right depends on the buyer's needs. For those who want better fuel efficiency, strong mileage and a premium hatchback at a lower price, the Maruti Baleno facelift is the better choice. But for those who prefer a higher riding position, a crossover SUV look and the strong performance of a turbo-petrol engine, the Maruti Fronx is worth considering with a slightly higher budget.
