Devdutt Padikkal to lead India A against Australia A in October red-ball series

India A and Australia A will soon play a red-ball series against each other. Devdutt Padikkal has been given the responsibility of captaining the India A side for this series. The young Indian batter has been handed the leadership for the upcoming series of four-day matches to be held in Puducherry. The series will be played against Australia A, and the India A squad for it has also been announced.
Padikkal had put up strong and big scores in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka. It is being said that he has been given this responsibility in view of that form. Padikkal himself has reacted to this new and important responsibility.
The 25-year-old Devdutt Padikkal has already made a name for himself in domestic cricket on the strength of his batting. He also performed well in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka, scoring a century in both Test matches of that series. His first major experience of captaincy, however, came in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, when he was handed the captaincy of the Karnataka side in the latter half of the season. On the strength of this experience in domestic cricket, he has now also been handed the reins of the India A side.
Speaking about his experience of captaincy, Padikkal said that leading the Karnataka side last season taught him a great deal. He expressed confidence that this experience in domestic cricket would now be very useful while leading the India A side. He also said that he genuinely enjoys taking up the responsibility of leadership. He made clear that he is taking the responsibility of leading the team forward as captain seriously.
Padikkal's strong form in red-ball cricket has been the main reason behind his getting the India A captaincy. In the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka, Padikkal was the most successful batter for the Indian team. In that series, he scored a total of 328 runs in just 3 innings at a superb average of 109.33, including two brilliant centuries. On the strength of this consistent performance, he has now been handed the responsibility of leading the India A side.
