VNIT professor Vilas Kalamkar gets IEI's Eminent Engineering Personality award

Professor Vilas Ramdas Kalamkar of the Mechanical Engineering Department at VNIT Nagpur has been given the Eminent Engineering Personality award for his contribution to academics, research and the engineering profession. The award was presented by the Institution of Engineers (India), or IEI, Kerala State Centre, under the Mechanical Engineering Division Board, at the inaugural function of the 41st National Convention of Mechanical Engineers.
The two-day national convention and seminar, themed "Emerging Domains in Robotics and AI", was held on September 4 and 5, 2026, at Visveswaraya Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram.
The award was presented by chief guest V. Muraleedharan, who has previously served as Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs. Also present on the occasion were IEI Kerala State Centre chairman Engineer Uday Kumar K.S., IEI Mechanical Engineering Division Board chairman Dr. Nilajkumar Najukrao Deshmukh, and Dr. (Professor) K. Madhusudanan Pillai, chairman of IEI KSC's Technical Committee.
Professor Kalamkar currently serves as Dean (Academic) and as a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at VNIT Nagpur. The award reflects years of work in engineering education, research and leadership.
Professor Kalamkar has mentored several PhD and postgraduate students. He has more than 150 journal and conference papers published. He has also made a significant contribution to the country's defence sector as principal investigator on critical research projects for the Ministry of Defence and DRDO. His work in rural development is also notable, including patented innovations related to hybrid draft biomass cookstoves.
Professor Kalamkar is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and a member of several engineering associations.
Faculty, administration and students of VNIT Nagpur, along with the wider engineering community, have congratulated Professor Kalamkar on the national honour.
