Toyota launches hybrid Land Cruiser 300, drops petrol V6
Toyota has added a hybrid powertrain to the Land Cruiser 300 in Japan, discontinuing the earlier petrol V6 version.
Toyota has made a major change to its popular Land Cruiser 300 SUV, launching a hybrid powertrain version in Japan. The new model pairs the 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine with an electric motor. According to the company, this setup delivers 457 PS of power and 790 Nm of torque.
Following this update, the older petrol V6 model has been discontinued. The SUV will now be available in only two options: a 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel and the new hybrid version. Sales of the SUV in Japan will begin from October 1.
The Land Cruiser 300 Hybrid retains a 7-seater cabin, while the diesel variant continues to be offered only in a 5-seater layout. The hybrid model has a 6.5 Ah nickel-metal hydride battery fitted beneath the cargo area, with the electric motor paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Notably, even if the hybrid system develops a serious fault, the vehicle can continue to run on the V6 engine, removing the risk of it stalling midway.
On features, the new Land Cruiser gets wireless smartphone charging, road-to-vehicle communication and a cold weather package as standard. The ZX and GR Sport variants get dual 12.3-inch screens, a colour head-up display, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, a cool box, rear-seat entertainment and front and rear dashcams.
On off-road capability, the hybrid model retains the earlier record, offering the same 700 mm water-wading capability. However, it weighs 170 kg more than the older petrol V6 model. The fuel tank capacity has also been reduced from 80 litres to 68 litres. Separately, the 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel engine generates 303 hp of power and 700 Nm of torque.
Toyota has also updated the exterior design of the ZX HEV, with a new bumper extension, updated fog-lamp garnish and side intakes. Besides this, the new Modellista package includes front and rear bumper extensions, flared fenders, side steps, a roof spoiler and 20-inch forged aluminium wheels.
