MBA graduate calls salary above Rs 2 lakh a month a 'trap', sparks debate
An MBA graduate's viral Instagram reel argues chasing salary beyond a personal benchmark comes at too high a cost.
Most young working professionals today have one goal: to earn as much salary as possible. But an MBA professional has questioned this very idea. He says the price of a higher income can sometimes outweigh the benefit it brings, and that life reaches a point where this needs to be thought through.
The point was made in a reel that went viral on Instagram, in which MBA graduate Mohit Talreja gave the advice. He says that instead of chasing an unlimited salary, professionals working in cities should treat a monthly income of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh as their "personal financial limit". He has called the race for an ever higher salary a "trap".
According to Talreja, professionals working in a city should try to reach a fixed salary level as soon as possible. He says that if you reach Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh a month in India, that should be your benchmark. However, he also clarified that everyone can set this benchmark for themselves based on their own circumstances.
He further says that the more you chase salary and the higher you want to go, the more things you have to sacrifice. This directly affects other important aspects of life.
Talreja's advice is to work hard at the start of your career, achieve a level of financial security, and then keep advancing in your career. But do not make this the sole priority in life.
He was referring to things like health, family and learning new things. He says that when you make salary and work the only measure of success or progress, these essential things start to get left behind.
Constantly earning money by selling your time, chasing a higher salary, or working day and night to make someone else rich may not bring lasting peace of mind. His advice is that instead, some of that time should be spent learning something new or building another source of income.
