Kia India has launched factory-fitted CNG variants of its Carens and Carens Clavis in the Indian market. The starting ex-showroom price of the new CNG models is Rs 12.11 lakh. The company has paired a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a CNG powertrain and a 6-speed manual gearbox in both cars, giving customers looking for a CNG option in a 3-row family car a new choice.

The Carens CNG is available only in the Premium (O) variant, while the Carens Clavis CNG comes in two options, HTE and HTE (O). The Carens CNG is priced at Rs 12.11 lakh. The Carens Clavis HTE CNG variant is priced at Rs 12.38 lakh, and the HTE (O) CNG at Rs 13.34 lakh, making the HTE (O) variant Rs 96,000 costlier than the HTE.

Both cars use Kia's Smartstream 1.5-litre petrol engine. In CNG mode, this engine generates 96 PS of power and 123 Nm of torque. The CNG tank capacity is 60 litres. Notably, despite the addition of the CNG system, the company has retained the spare wheel, which could be useful for customers undertaking long-distance travel.

Along with the CNG system, the company has also made changes to the engine calibration. Additionally, the cars get suspension improvements, 16-inch wheels and larger 16-inch front disc brakes. To retain 3-row seating while fitting the CNG hardware, the third-row seat-back frame has also been modified.

The driver gets a separate fuel-change switch to switch between petrol and CNG modes. The 4.2-inch colour TFT instrument cluster shows a separate Distance to Empty reading for CNG, making it easier to gauge how far the car can run on CNG. Turbo petrol or diesel engine options are currently not available on these CNG models.
