Iran holds 313,000-strong military parade in Tehran, warns US and Israel
Iran staged a mass volunteer military march in Tehran with a symbolic turnout of 313,000, signalling readiness for a possible ground attack by the US and Israel.
It has been exactly 203 days since the war between Iran and Israel-US began. During this period, Israel and the US have tried every means to pressure Iran, including the deaths of Iran's top leaders, senior scientists, officials and military officers. Missile strikes have destroyed key public infrastructure in Iran, but Iran is still not ready to concede defeat in the war.
Amid this, political circles around the world have been discussing whether the US and Israel might now launch a direct ground war. As part of preparations for this, Iran organised a large volunteer exercise, or military march, of 313,000 people in Tehran on September 18, 2026. The programme was held under the Janfadayan-e-Iran campaign, meaning those who sacrifice for Iran.
It is claimed that 3.13 lakh volunteers took part in the event in Tehran, Iran's capital, and videos related to it are also circulating on social media. The stated aim of the campaign is to give ordinary citizens basic military training to prepare them for possible attacks in future.
According to Iranian officials, more than 600,000 people have registered for military training, though this figure has not been independently verified. The programme also featured a display of drones, military equipment and uniformed volunteers.
The question arises as to why the figure of 313,000 was chosen. This is not just a military figure but is linked to Shia religious tradition. According to Shia tradition, it is believed that this many companions will stand with Imam Mahdi. For this reason, the figure of 313,000 is also used in a symbolic sense.
Amid the war between the US, Israel and Iran that has been going on since February, the event is being seen as a show of strength meant to send the message that Iran is prepared for any possible attack. Statements from Iranian officials make clear that they fear a ground attack ahead.
In simple terms, Iran is giving ordinary citizens basic military training to build a large-scale reserve force, and through this is showing the US and Israel the strength of its large manpower.
