Chandrapur exits Naxal-hit list, 34-year-old Wani police camp in Jiwati shut
Chandrapur police shut the Wani armed camp in Jiwati after the district was removed from the list of Naxal-affected areas
The armed police Wani camp, which had been running in the Jiwati area of Chandrapur district for the past 34 years, has now been shut down. The Chandrapur Superintendent of Police's office issued an order on this on September 17, 2026.
The camp came under the Jiwati police station and was started on a temporary basis from June 8, 1992, with the aim of effectively curbing anti-Naxal operations.
As per a government decision dated June 29, 2026, Chandrapur district has now been removed from the list of Naxal-affected areas. The order also states that there is currently no sign of any Naxal movement or activity in the camp's area.
For this reason, the Wani camp is no longer needed and is being closed temporarily.
Police officers and staff posted at the camp will be transferred to the establishment of Jiwati police station. The order directs that after the camp is closed, all its officers and staff report to Jiwati police station, and that related records also be deposited there.
The officer in charge of the camp has also been ordered to immediately deposit the weapons and ammunition in his possession at the armoury of the police headquarters in Chandrapur.
Even though the camp is being closed, the Superintendent of Police has made clear in the order that, given the area's security, Jiwati police will have to maintain regular patrolling around the camp and ensure no untoward incident occurs.
This key centre of the anti-Naxal campaign had been functioning for a long time, and its closure will bring changes to the police arrangement in the Jiwati area. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Gadchandur, has been directed to complete the entire process and submit a compliance report to the Superintendent of Police's office.
