The central government has made biometric Aadhaar authentication mandatory for booking subsidised domestic LPG cylinders. According to the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the new rule will come into effect from October 1, 2026.

The ministry said customers who book domestic LPG cylinders at the subsidised controlled retail price will now have to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication, or BAA. Customers who have already completed this authentication will not need to do it again, and their bookings will continue as before. However, customers who have not yet completed the BAA process will only be able to book cylinders at the subsidised rate after completing the authentication.

The government said the aim of the move is to ensure the benefit of the subsidy reaches genuine and eligible households. Aadhaar biometric authentication allows a customer's identity to be verified more accurately, and will also help identify and act against duplicate or ineligible LPG connections. The government clarified that the objective is to stop the misuse of subsidised domestic LPG for commercial or industrial use and to make the subsidy distribution system more transparent.

Customers can complete this biometric authentication in several ways. The first is through the delivery person who comes to deliver the cylinder at home. The second is by visiting the showroom of their respective LPG distributor to complete the biometric authentication. The third and easiest way is through a mobile app, which allows the process to be completed from home using the relevant oil company's app. Indane customers can use the IndianOil ONE app, Bharatgas customers the HelloBPCL app, and HP Gas customers the HP PAY app.

The ministry has advised customers to check whether their biometric Aadhaar authentication has been completed, since October 1, 2026 is the deadline for this change to take effect. Customers should therefore complete the process in time so that there is no disruption to their subsidised bookings.

The central government also clarified that the purpose of this process is not to deny eligible households access to LPG service, but to ensure the subsidy benefit reaches the correct beneficiaries and to check irregularities in the LPG distribution system.
