ABVP wins three of four DUSU posts, independent takes vice president seat
ABVP swept the president, secretary and joint secretary posts in Delhi University Student Union polls, while independent Deepanshu Shaukeen won vice president
The result of the 2026 Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) election was declared on Saturday, September 19. The union has four central posts, and candidates of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) won three of them. ABVP took the posts of president, secretary and joint secretary, while independent candidate Deepanshu Shaukeen won the post of vice president. The result showed ABVP's dominance overall, though the vice president's post presented a different picture.
The contest for president between ABVP's Yash Dabas and NSUI's Vijay Shankar Meena was extremely close. The lead kept changing through different rounds of counting, keeping the result uncertain until the end and creating tension among supporters on both sides. Yash Dabas eventually won with 24,576 votes, defeating Vijay Shankar Meena by a margin of 2,053 votes. In the race for secretary, ABVP's Riya Chhabra won, while ABVP's Lakshya Raj Singh won the joint secretary post. This gave ABVP three of the four central posts, strengthening its grip on the student union.
The vice president result showed a different picture. Independent candidate Deepanshu Shaukeen won decisively for this post. Shaukeen had taken a big lead from the first round of counting itself, and this lead held through subsequent rounds. By the end of the seventh round, he had 11,347 votes, while ABVP's Ishu Maurya, who was behind him, had 5,739 votes. This lead held until the end, and Shaukeen was declared the winner, with the independent candidate upsetting the established student organisations.
The results for DUSU's four main posts were as follows: president, Yash Dabas (ABVP); vice president, Deepanshu Shaukeen (independent); secretary, Riya Chhabra (ABVP); and joint secretary, Lakshya Raj Singh (ABVP).
Voting for the DUSU election was held on September 18. More than 1.51 lakh students were eligible to vote, of whom a total of 40.46 percent turned out. The turnout figure indicates the level of political participation among Delhi University students.
Counting began at 8 am on Saturday in the multipurpose hall of the University Sports Stadium in North Campus. Tight security was in place across the Delhi University campus during the counting, with more than 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed, and traffic restrictions imposed on major roads in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
