BCCI AGM: Search begins for Ajit Agarkar's successor as chief selector
At its annual general meeting, the BCCI began looking for a new chief selector as Ajit Agarkar's term nears its end.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held its annual general meeting (AGM) on Friday, at which a major decision is said to have been taken regarding chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Agarkar's term as chairman of the selection committee ends on October 6, 2026, and the BCCI has now begun the search for his successor. After the meeting, a senior BCCI office-bearer told the media that certain office-bearers have been picked to take a decision on the selection committee. He did not share any further details with the media.
Representatives of cricket associations from various states attended the BCCI's 95th AGM. The meeting was attended by the Bengal Cricket Association's representative and former India captain Sourav Ganguly, as well as the Karnataka State Cricket Association's representative and former fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad.
Besides appointing the senior selection committee chairman, the BCCI is also considering the process of filling all five seats on the junior selection committee. During the meeting, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) requested the board to give Mumbai priority for some major matches. MCA secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar gave this information.
The well-known Wankhede Stadium has not hosted a Test match in the last two years. The last Test there was played against New Zealand at the end of 2024. Upcoming matches at Wankhede include some fixtures of the Women's Champions League and the Women's Premier League, both to be held there for the first time early next year.
After the meeting, the BCCI issued a press release stating that preparations have begun for its centenary year in 2028. The centenary will be marked through various events across the year, starting from December 2027 to 2028, and has been described as a significant moment in the history of Indian cricket.
