Arshad Warsi reveals how he got Maharaj's dark, imposing look in 'Ghamasan'

Actor Arshad Warsi, known largely for comic roles, is drawing attention for his part as Maharaj, a dark and imposing character, in the film 'Ghamasan', directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and currently streaming on ZEE5.

'Ghamasan' is set in the rugged, rural world of Hindi cinema and follows a running chase between two forces driven by different ideologies. The story centres on two main characters, Warsi's Maharaj and Pratik Gandhi's Aditya, a fearless officer determined to go beyond the call of duty.

To bring Maharaj to life effectively on screen, Warsi worked hard on his look, immersing himself in the character so that its physicality, body language and overall personality would come through.

Speaking about the look required for the role, Arshad Warsi said, "I think to play Maharaj, I needed to look like this guy. We can act, of course, but somewhere the right casting matters a lot."

He further said, "I had a particular look in mind for this character and I wanted to bring it to reality. He had to look a certain way, and I have more or less achieved that."

On the character, Warsi added, "I knew I had to make this character look heavy, a bit weighty. But it turned out well, it was fun, and the look also turned out good."

With 'Ghamasan', director Tigmanshu Dhulia returns to stories from the Hindi heartland. Raw storytelling, complex characters and a tense cat-and-mouse chase set the film apart. Moving away from the traditional hero-villain template, the story gives key roles to the characters played by Warsi and Gandhi, with Maharaj emerging as one of the most distinct roles of Warsi's career. 'Ghamasan' is currently streaming in Hindi on ZEE5.
