Russian drone strike on bus in Nikopol kills 5, injures seven

The war between Russia and Ukraine is growing more brutal by the day, with Russian forces now striking not just military sites but ordinary civilian settlements and passenger transport, as was seen again on Wednesday. On Wednesday morning, a Russian FPV, or first-person-view, suicide drone slammed into a passenger bus travelling at speed in Ukraine's Nikopol district. At least five civilians were killed on the spot in the attack, while seven others were seriously injured.

Ukraine's foreign minister Andrii Sybiha gave official information about the incident on the social media platform X. According to him, the attack was carried out by a highly precise, remotely controlled FPV suicide drone. The bus was carrying a full load of passengers when the Russian drone targeted it directly, and the explosion caused chaos across the area. Local emergency services rushed to the scene as soon as they learned of the incident, and the injured were admitted to a nearby hospital. Fear and tension have spread in the Nikopol area following the incident.

Shortly after the bus attack in Nikopol, it emerged that Russian forces had also targeted a passenger train running on the Kyiv-Mykolaiv railway line. The sudden attack caused great panic among passengers. However, Ukrainian railway authorities and rescue teams managed to safely evacuate all passengers and railway staff in time, averting major loss of life.

Foreign minister Sybiha expressed sharp anger at Russia's action. He directly accused Russia of deliberately trying to destroy ordinary civilian life, public transport systems and communication infrastructure in Ukraine. He said Russia's main aim in carrying out such cowardly attacks on passengers and public transport going about their daily business was to spread terror among the Ukrainian public.

According to official information from Ukraine's foreign ministry, Russian forces have for some time been consistently targeting passenger trains, railway stations and key transport routes. During this difficult period of the war, the railway is Ukraine's largest and most important means of evacuating civilians, moving the injured to safety, and supplying essential goods and aid to different parts of the country. The railway is also considered vital for reviving Ukraine's struggling economy and keeping the supply of essential goods running smoothly. Ukrainian officials have therefore made the serious allegation that by attacking railway infrastructure, locomotives and stations, Russia is plotting to bring Ukraine's entire transport system to a halt.

Against the backdrop of these rising attacks on civilians, foreign minister Sybiha has called on the global community and Western allies to urgently take even tougher steps against Russia. He said the international community's response should not be limited to condemning individual attacks, but should aim to end Russia's ability to wage war altogether. He underlined the need for new and wide-ranging sanctions that completely cut off Russia's economic income, military technology, weapons production capacity and supply chains.

Ukraine has also made clear that it urgently needs additional and modern air defence systems and interceptor missiles to protect its innocent civilians and important cities. The Ukrainian administration said building a strong protective shield to destroy Russian drones and missiles in the air is the only way to survive such cowardly attacks.
