Nagpur: Two women raped after accused promised marriage, one arrested

Two separate cases of women being cheated on the pretext of marriage and raped have come to light in Nagpur. Police have registered cases in both matters, and one accused has been arrested.

The victim in the first case is a 44 year old married woman who currently lives separately from her husband. She got to know an accused, Rajesh Goswami, on the website Shaadi.com on July 30, 2022. Within a few days the two developed a romantic relationship and Rajesh promised to marry her. The accused, originally a resident of Himachal Pradesh, works as a cook at a guest house. He took the woman to a house in Manish Nagar and had physical relations with her there. This continued to happen repeatedly afterward. When the woman later raised the subject of marriage, the accused clearly refused to marry her. After being refused marriage, the victim went to Beltarodi police station and filed a complaint. Based on the complaint, police registered a case of rape and arrested the accused, Rajesh Goswami.

The second case involves a 29 year old woman. She got to know a young man of her own age on Instagram, and the two grew close. The accused promised to marry her. On the night of December 31, 2025, on the pretext of celebrating the new year, the accused took the woman to a hotel in Sonegaon. The two had physical relations there. The accused then continued to take her to different hotels and have relations with her. When the woman later asked about marriage, the accused beat her and attempted to strangle her to death, and also clearly refused to marry her. Following this, the woman went to Sonegaon police station and filed a complaint, and police have registered a case of rape.

In both cases, the accused are alleged to have turned an acquaintance into a romantic relationship, gained the women's trust by promising marriage, and later refused to marry them. Separate cases have been registered at both police stations and further investigation is underway.
