Wheelchairs are a symbol of dignity, says Governor Jishnu Dev Varma
Governor Jishnu Dev Varma launched a drug-awareness portal and urged youth to help those battling addiction and to see disabled people through their abilities, not their disability.
Addiction among youth and students is rising, affecting their social, psychological and family life, Governor Jishnu Dev Varma said. He noted that the Union government has taken the initiative to help people caught in substance abuse.
Helping a person struggling with addiction does not mean interfering in their life, but trying to bring them back to life, the Governor said. He appealed to youth and students to come forward to help those with addictions. He also said the fight against drugs needs to be carried across the country with the message "Drug is not cool, it's cruel."
When looking at persons with disabilities, one should think not of their disability but of their ability, talent and determination, the Governor said. He added that giving them equal opportunities, rather than mere sympathy, is society's responsibility.
Service is not just an act but an expression that comes from an attitude, a sense of responsibility and humanity, the Governor said. A wheelchair is not merely a means of moving around but a symbol of dignity, independence and opportunity for persons with disabilities, he said, adding that one should look at a person's extraordinary qualities and abilities rather than what they lack.
As part of the Seva Sankalp campaign held to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday, the Governor administered a de-addiction pledge to students of HSNC University. The Governor said the drug problem has two sides, demand and supply, and that along with controlling supply, wide public awareness is needed to reduce demand. He also noted the need to build a new social system given the impact of rising addiction on families and society.
At the same event, the Governor inaugurated the "Say No To Drugs" portal developed by the University of Mumbai. The portal will be used to take a pledge for de-addiction and to spread awareness against drugs. Students raised their hands and took a pledge to remain drug-free and contribute to building a drug-free India.
The event was attended by the Governor's Secretary S. Ramamurthy, K.C. College officiating principal Tejashree Shanbhag, Meghashrey Foundation president Seema Singh, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Sevabhavi Trust trustee Dr. Sumedh Chavan, actor Ravi Dubey and HSNC University Registrar Dr. Bhagwan Balani.
