Mumbai: FDA suspends licences of 7 places including Nair Hospital canteen

Amid fears of a rise in food adulteration during the festive season, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Mumbai has stepped up its crackdown. FDA teams began inspections of hotels and food establishments that were ignoring food safety and hygiene rules. In this drive, licences of seven major food establishments in Mumbai were immediately suspended.

The action has intensified under the leadership of FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. After the canteen at Mumbai civic body's Nair Hospital was found violating food safety rules, the administration suspended its licence. The step was taken keeping in mind the health of patients, their relatives and others.

Meanwhile, an FDA team carried out a surprise inspection at Colaba's well-known Olympia Coffee House following complaints from customers. The inspection found serious lapses in cleanliness, the administration said. Food was found being stored near a urinal. The kitchen and the utensil-washing area were also found dirty.

It was also alleged that clotted blood from non-vegetarian items was found in the fridge. The inspection also found that raw vegetarian and non-vegetarian items were being stored together instead of separately, the FDA said. Notably, of the 35 staff handling food, 34 did not have the required food safety training, the inspection found.

Action was also taken against a quick-commerce delivery centre of Blinkit Commerce Private Limited in Chembur. Action has also been taken against Vishwas Sweets and Snacks and A-1 General and Dry Fruits in Ghatkopar, Milan Punjab in Worli, and Sadguru Sweets in Malad East.

The licences of these establishments, which violated food safety standards, have been suspended, and further legal proceedings have been initiated under food safety law. The action sends a clear message that establishments selling food in disregard of the rules will no longer be spared.
