Drone intrusion near Mecca thwarted, India voices concern, Saudi warns Houthis of red line
Saudi air defences shot down a suspected drone nearing Mecca's restricted airspace, prompting Indian concern and a sharp Saudi warning to Houthi rebels.
Amid rising military tension in the Middle East, an incident has raised questions about security in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca. Mecca is regarded as the holiest site in the Muslim world, and in the early hours of Wednesday, Saudi Arabia's air defence system shot down a suspected combat drone that tried to enter the city's restricted airspace. The incident caused a stir across the Middle East, and the Indian government also registered an official and strong reaction.
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued an official statement strongly condemning the attack. The ministry said clearly that any violent act harming innocent civilians, religious sites or infrastructure cannot be tolerated. Mecca is the centre of faith for hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide, so any military activity in the area is considered extremely sensitive. India, backing Saudi Arabia's territorial integrity and sovereignty, appealed to all sides to pursue diplomacy and restraint to maintain peace in the Middle East.
Turki al-Malki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led military coalition, reacted angrily to the incident, calling it a cowardly and despicable terrorist act. Al-Malki said clearly that Saudi Arabia's borders, the Grand Mosque (Masjid al-Haram) and the safety of the millions of pilgrims who visit it are a red line for the country that will not be allowed to be crossed. Saudi Arabia will not compromise on this issue, and forces threatening its security will be met with a firm response.
This tension is seen as part of the ongoing conflict between Houthi rebels in Yemen and the Saudi military. Matters have worsened further after the incident near Mecca. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree has claimed that his forces shot down a Saudi Arabian F-15 fighter jet patrolling Yemen's Marib province using a surface-to-air missile. However, Saudi military officials have not yet officially confirmed this claim.
The drone incident, occurring so close to the city of Mecca, has caused concern not only in Saudi Arabia but across the Muslim world and the international community. Millions of pilgrims travel to Mecca from around the world every year for Hajj and Umrah, so any military activity or drone shoot-down near this religious centre is considered extremely serious for international security. Given the strong diplomatic ties between India and Saudi Arabia, India promptly stated its position on the incident. There is said to be a need to begin international-level talks as soon as possible to maintain regional stability and protect religious sites.
