Nagpur : In a major crackdown on the illegal drug trade, the Nagpur Police carried out two separate raids in Kotwali and Koradi police station areas in a single night, seizing around 34 grams of suspected MD powder and other material worth a combined Rs 6.19 lakh.

Two persons were arrested in the operations, while two others have been declared wanted. The latest action by the Anti-Narcotics Squad and Crime Branch Unit-5 has now turned the spotlight on the supply chain behind MD distribution in the city, with investigators working to identify the source of the seized contraband and trace the wider network.

20 gm MD seized in Kotwali

The first operation was conducted on Dasra Road in Mahal, near the Mascot Honda service centre in the Kotwali police station area.

Acting on information about suspected drug activity, police detained Shehzan Sheikh and conducted a search. The search allegedly led to the recovery of around 20 grams of MD powder, valued at approximately Rs 2 lakh.

Police also seized a mobile phone and other material worth around Rs 40,000, besides a two-wheeler estimated to be worth Rs 1.20 lakh. The total value of property seized in the operation was put at approximately Rs 3.60 lakh.

Investigators are also searching for Sheikh Arshad alias Raja, who has been named as a wanted accused in the case. Police said his name has figured in earlier serious criminal cases as well.

14 gm MD recovered in Koradi

In the second operation, Crime Branch Unit-5 raided Jagdamba Residency in Arya Nagar, under the jurisdiction of Koradi police station.

The team arrested Farhan Ayub Sheikh and allegedly recovered around 14 grams of MD powder from his possession. The drug was valued at approximately Rs 1.41 lakh.

Police also seized a weighing scale, cash, a two-wheeler, a mobile phone and other material during the operation. The total value of the seized property in this case was estimated at Rs 2.59 lakh.

Shahid Ansari has been named as a wanted accused in the case.

Supply network under scanner

With the two operations producing recoveries within hours of each other, investigators are now attempting to establish whether the accused are linked to a larger drug distribution network operating in Nagpur.

Police are probing the source of the MD, the identity of the suppliers, the intended recipients and the chain through which the drug was being distributed in the city.

The recovery of a weighing scale in the Koradi case is also being examined as part of the investigation into the suspected handling and distribution of the drug.

Cases have been registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in both incidents.

Police said the investigation would focus on identifying other persons involved in the supply chain and determining the extent of the MD network operating in Nagpur.
