Bengaluru: At a time when there is growing demand for a second airport for Bengaluru to be built in Tumakuru, including from DCM G Parameshwara and Union minister V Somanna, the govt Wednesday categorically said there is no proposal before it at present to set up a second airport in Tumakuru district.
Industries minister MB Patil made the annoucement while replying to a question raised by MLA Jyoti Ganesh GB in the assembly.
Govt referred to the Centre’s Greenfield Airport Policy, 2008, under which permission is generally not granted for establishing a new greenfield airport within an aerial distance of 150km from an existing civilian airport. However, proposals for airports within this distance can be considered on a case-by-case basis after examining their potential impact on the existing facility, with the final decision resting with the Centre.
Replying to another question on the status of the proposal to build Bengaluru’s second international airport, govt said it has identified three potential locations and appointed a consultant to carry out comprehensive strategic and technical studies before a final site is selected.
The three locations are Somanahalli and Choodahalli on Kanakapura Road in Bengaluru South district, and Gudamaranahalli near Nelamangala. The state govt is examining the possibility of identifying a suitable site in Harohalli region, Bengaluru South, where inspection of potential locations is under way.
