Nagpur : The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will launch a massive 40-day property tax recovery campaign from August 20 to September 30, targeting more than 3.24 lakh defaulting properties across the city in an effort to recover Rs 1,279.05 crore in outstanding dues.
The citywide drive, approved by Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar on August 12, is aimed at intensifying revenue collection while taking stringent action against chronic tax defaulters. Officials said the campaign will be implemented simultaneously across all ten municipal zones, with special emphasis on recovering dues from high-value commercial and residential property owners.
According to the Property Tax Department, the total outstanding amount comprises Rs 683.66 crore towards unpaid property tax, Rs 586.70 crore in accumulated penalty for delayed payments and Rs 8.69 crore pending under statutory warrant proceedings.
The recovery exercise will cover residential, commercial, mixed-use properties and vacant land. Of the total arrears, 2.35 lakh built-up properties account for dues of Rs 472.12 crore, while 88,918 vacant plots and land parcels together owe Rs 211.55 crore.
Officials said enforcement will begin with major defaulters. The first phase of the drive will focus on 624 commercial establishments, 404 mixed-use properties and 709 residential properties, each having outstanding dues exceeding Rs 5 lakh. Recovery teams will subsequently move to smaller categories of defaulters in a phased manner.
To strengthen enforcement, civic squads have been empowered to invoke Rule 42 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Tax Rules, enabling them to issue demand warrants, attach properties and seize movable assets if tax dues remain unpaid despite notices.
At the same time, the NMC has introduced measures to encourage immediate compliance. Property tax collection teams will carry Point-of-Sale (POS) machines, allowing taxpayers to pay their dues digitally at their doorstep as soon as a demand notice is served.
The initiative follows a proposal by Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare, after which the Property Tax Department procured 100 POS machines. The devices were distributed to tax collectors by Mayor Neeta Thakre on Independence Day.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Milind Meshram said the digital payment facility has been introduced to make tax collection more citizen-friendly. He said property owners will be able to pay their dues instantly without having to visit municipal offices repeatedly, making the process more convenient, transparent and efficient, particularly for senior citizens and women.
Meshram added that the progress of the campaign will be reviewed on a daily basis to ensure effective implementation. He urged property owners to clear their outstanding dues before enforcement action begins, warning that failure to pay could result in additional penalty, legal proceedings, attachment of properties and execution of recovery warrants.
The civic administration expects the intensive recovery drive to significantly improve its financial position and generate additional resources for infrastructure development and public services across Nagpur.
