Nagpur : From conquering the international chess circuit to becoming the first Indian woman to win the FIDE Women’s World Cup, Nagpur’s chess star Divya Deshmukh has added another prestigious honour to her rapidly growing list of achievements. The 20-year-old Grandmaster has been selected for the Arjuna Award under the National Sports Awards 2025, bringing national recognition to one of the most remarkable sporting journeys to emerge from Nagpur.
The announcement has triggered celebrations among sports enthusiasts and chess circles in Nagpur, where Divya has emerged as an inspiration for a new generation of players. Her selection comes months after she created history at the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup in Batumi, Georgia, defeating India’s seasoned Grandmaster Koneru Humpy in the final tiebreak to lift the title. FIDE described the victory as a landmark moment, with Divya becoming the youngest-ever Women’s World Cup champion and the first Indian player to win the prestigious event.
The Arjuna recognition therefore represents more than another award for the young chess prodigy. It is an acknowledgement of a career that has rapidly progressed from junior success to the highest levels of international chess.
Divya’s rise has been remarkably swift. She entered the 2025 Women’s World Cup as an International Master and was ranked 15th in the starting field, competing against an elite line-up that included several of the world’s strongest players.
Her breakthrough at the tournament was particularly significant. She became the first Indian woman to reach the Women’s World Cup final after defeating former world champion Tan Zhongyi of China in the semifinals. That victory also secured her a place in the next Women’s Candidates Tournament and earned her a Grandmaster norm.
She then faced Humpy in an all-Indian final. After the two classical games ended without a winner, Divya held her nerve in the rapid tiebreaks and defeated Humpy 1.5-0.5 to claim the championship.
The victory had an additional historic dimension: it secured Divya the Grandmaster title, making her India’s 88th Grandmaster, while FIDE hailed her as the youngest winner in the history of the Women’s World Cup.
Divya’s World Cup triumph was not an isolated achievement. Her rise had already accelerated through a series of strong performances at the junior and senior levels.
Her international breakthrough included winning the World Junior Girls Championship in 2024. She was also part of India’s gold-medal-winning team at the 2024 Chess Olympiad and earned an individual board gold during the campaign.
Her World Cup victory in 2025, however, elevated her status from promising junior to established international star. FIDE has since listed her as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Candidates Tournament, where she is among the eight players competing for the right to challenge for the women’s world championship.
Divya’s selection for the Arjuna Award comes alongside fellow Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi, with both chess players featuring among the 24 athletes recommended for the 2025 honour by the selection committee. The list also includes athletes from athletics, boxing, hockey, kabaddi, shooting, badminton, wrestling, rowing and other disciplines.
The award recognises sustained excellence in sport and is among India’s most prestigious national sporting honours. For Divya, the recognition comes at a pivotal stage of her career, when she has already moved into the senior international elite despite her young age.
Divya’s success has also strengthened Nagpur’s reputation on India’s chess map. Her journey has demonstrated that a player from the city can rise through the national circuit and compete successfully against the world’s elite.
