Nagpur: What initially appeared to be a sensational car robbery in Nagpur’s Hudkeshwar area turned out to be an elaborate hoax allegedly staged by the complainant himself to avoid repaying a loan of nearly Rs 2 lakh to his friend.
The complainant, Amol Santosh Dharneja, a resident of Trimurti Nagar, had approached the Hudkeshwar Police claiming that he had been assaulted at knifepoint and robbed of his car and Rs 2.05 lakh in cash. However, the police investigation soon began to expose several inconsistencies in his account.
According to police, Dharneja had borrowed around Rs 2 lakh from his friend Avtarsingh Mahendersingh Dhunna to start a cafe. Dhunna had been repeatedly demanding repayment, but Dharneja was allegedly trying to avoid returning the money.
On August 22, Dharneja reportedly decided to fabricate a robbery story. He told police that while he was driving from the Pyramid City area, an unidentified man sought a lift. After travelling some distance, the man allegedly pulled out a knife, assaulted him and fled with his car. Dharneja also claimed that Rs 2.05 lakh in cash was kept inside the vehicle.
However, the alleged robbery failed to stand up to police scrutiny. During the investigation, officers found discrepancies in Dharneja’s statements. Police examined the suspected crime scene, mobile phone locations and other technical evidence, which raised serious doubts about the alleged robbery.
When confronted with the evidence and questioned repeatedly, Dharneja allegedly admitted that the robbery had been staged. He reportedly told investigators that he had fabricated the entire incident to avoid repaying the money borrowed from his friend and to buy himself more time.
The Hudkeshwar Police are now initiating legal action against Dharneja for allegedly lodging a false complaint and attempting to mislead the police. Further investigation is underway to establish all aspects of the fabricated robbery case.
