“The contractors concerned have been instructed to install GPS in all vehicles transporting ration grains. The Karnataka Food and Civil Supplies Corporation (KFCSC) has been instructed to install CCTVs in the KSCSC and non-KFCSC godowns. The tender process is under way to set up a Command and Control Centre in the department,” said Rizwan Arshad, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs of Karnataka, addressing the media.
“We have technology. So why not use it,” Mr. Arshad said, adding that the new features are part of the effort to introduce a permanent solution to the problem.
The department has been trying to revamp the PDS distribution through a ‘smart PDS’ system where an ePoS machine to verify the credentials of the beneficiary and an electronic weighing machine to accurately measure the quantity they are eligible for are proposed. The tender process for the installation of the same is in progress, the Minister said.
According to Mr. Arshad, as many as 1,497 FIRs have been registered in the last three years in connection with pilferage of PDS supply with 86,181 quintals of food grains and supplies worth ₹49.38 crores seized.
As per government data, currently 4,44,32,102 beneficiaries in the State are covered under the PDS scheme.
Mr. Arshad said the Central government had provided a list of 7,76,206 people suspected to be ineligible for BPL cards. Following this, 4,26,835 ration cards have been converted into APL.
“We have stayed further deletions temporarily for now. However, as per the law we have to ultimately heed to the Central government and cannot act independently,” he said.
Regarding the Indira Food Kit scheme for the BPL card holders, the Minister noted that the department is further analysing it as the price of essentials have gone up due to the ongoing war.
