Karnataka has initiated the process to procure around 15,000 new buses through its four State-owned transport corporations to improve connectivity in transport-deprived areas, including rural regions, Transport Minister Byrathi Suresh said on Saturday.

Speaking after hoisting the national flag during the 80th Independence Day celebrations at the Chickballapur District Stadium, Mr. Suresh said, “The buses will be purchased in phases, depending on the availability of funds, to strengthen the public transport system across the State.”

The Minister also said that nearly 10 lakh students had been provided free bus passes under the government’s student bus pass scheme at a cost of ₹286 crore.
