According to Siddalingesh, divisional controller, KSRTC, Chikkaballapur, 32 passengers were on board, and no one was injured. He said the driver noticed a spark in the engine starter and immediately alerted the passengers. The driver and conductor helped the elderly and children get off the bus.
Though the bus was equipped with a fire extinguisher, the crew could not use it as they were busy evacuating the passengers, Siddalingesh said.
A portion of the bus was gutted in the fire. Repairs will be carried out and the bus is expected to return to service within a week, he said.
