City police arrested a 65-year-old JD(S) functionary Sunday afternoon for allegedly assaulting an on-duty traffic police constable.
The accused, Manjunath C, alias Gottigere Manjanna, is a resident of Gottigere. According to the FIR, the incident occurred around 3pm at Gottigere junction when traffic constable Arun Manjappa stopped Manjunath’s car to allow vehicles approaching from the opposite direction to pass. Angered by being stopped, Manjunath allegedly attacked the constable.
“When I stopped the vehicle, the person (Manjunath C), sitting next to the driver, shouted at me. When I sought an explanation, he came out and punched me in the face. Also, he tried to kick me in the private parts. I resisted but in vain. Also, he issued dire threats and vowed that he would not let me work in the area,” Arun stated in the complaint to Hulimavu police.
A police officer said Manjunath was arrested at his residence in the early hours of Monday. “Arun filed the complaint late Sunday night. Though three other people were with Manjunath, we arrested him as he was the one who allegedly attacked the constable,” the officer said.
Later that afternoon, police produced Manjunath before a local court, which granted him conditional bail on health grounds.
