Nagpur: Mayor Nita Thakare has expressed strong displeasure over the national song Vande Mataram being sung only partially during the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) general body meeting. Taking serious note of the incident, the mayor has written to NMC Commissioner Dr. Vipin and directed him to conduct an inquiry and take necessary action.
The NMC general body meeting was held at the District Planning Bhavan on August 20. As per tradition, the meeting began with the singing of Vande Mataram. However, on this occasion, the singing was stopped before the song was completed.
In her letter, Mayor Thakare stated that it was inappropriate for Vande Mataram to be sung only partially during an official and important civic body meeting. She directed the administration to investigate the exact reason behind the incident and fix responsibility on those concerned.
The mayor has also ordered officials to issue clear instructions to ensure that such an incident is not repeated in the future. In addition, the NMC has been directed to establish a standard procedure for the singing of the national anthem and Vande Mataram during civic body meetings.
The mayor’s firm stand has drawn attention within the NMC administration, with officials now expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
