New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced its new team of national office-bearers, nearly seven months after Nitin Nabin took over as the party’s 12th National President. The revamped organisational structure reflects the BJP’s continued emphasis on social representation, regional balance and electoral preparedness ahead of a series of crucial Assembly elections, including the politically significant Uttar Pradesh polls next year.
The newly constituted team includes 12 women and seeks to provide representation to various social groups, including Scheduled Castes (SCs), Other Backward Classes (OBCs), upper castes and tribal communities, in line with the party’s social engineering strategy.
One of the biggest highlights of the reshuffle is the return of senior leaders Smriti Irani and Ram Madhav to key organisational roles. Irani has been appointed as one of the party’s eight national general secretaries and is the only woman to hold the position in the new team. Ram Madhav, who earlier served as a national general secretary, has been appointed a national vice-president.
Former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has also been inducted as a national general secretary. Union Minister Piyush Goyal has been appointed the party’s national treasurer, returning to a position he previously held between 2010 and 2014, while Anil Baluni has been retained as the BJP’s national media in-charge.
The BJP has named eight national general secretaries, retaining only Vinod Tawde and Sunil Bansal from the previous team. The other appointments include former Basti MP Harish Dwivedi, former Rajasthan BJP President Satish Poonia, Gajendra Patel from Madhya Pradesh representing the OBC community, Sanjay Bhatia, and Biplab Deb.
The decision to retain Tawde and Bansal is being viewed as a strategic move in view of the upcoming Assembly elections. Both leaders have handled important electoral assignments in recent years. Bansal played a significant organisational role during the West Bengal Assembly elections, while Tawde supervised the BJP’s campaign in Kerala and served as the party’s Bihar in-charge, overseeing the political transition following Nitish Kumar’s resignation as Chief Minister and the appointment of Samrat Choudhary.
The party has also appointed 16 national secretaries, including three-time Lok Sabha MP Bhola Singh from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr (SC) constituency and Rajya Sabha MP Kavita Patidar from Madhya Pradesh, who represents the OBC community.
The organisational overhaul also witnessed the exit of several senior leaders from key positions. Among those dropped are Arun Singh, who had served as national general secretary since 2015, Radha Mohan Das Agrawal, appointed general secretary in 2023, Tarun Chugh, and Dushyant Gautam, who had been serving as national general secretary since September 2020.
While Tarun Chugh has been relieved of his position as national general secretary, he has been entrusted with organisational responsibilities in poll-bound Punjab.
Dushyant Gautam, a prominent Dalit leader who unsuccessfully contested the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, was also removed from the list of national general secretaries. Gautam had figured in controversy in 2022 when his name was incorrectly linked on social media to the Ankita Bhandari murder case in Uttarakhand. He subsequently filed a defamation suit, following which the Delhi High Court passed interim orders directing the removal of social media content falsely associating him with the case.
Nitin Nabin, a five-time legislator from Bihar and now a Rajya Sabha member, assumed charge as the BJP’s National President on January 20. His appointment was widely interpreted as signalling a generational transition within the party. With the announcement of the new office-bearers, the BJP has now completed the formation of its central organisational team, positioning itself for a packed electoral calendar over the coming months.
