Video: Chlorine Leak at Godhani Water Plant Leaves 50+ Hospitalised, Area Sealed

NAGPUR: More than 50 people were hospitalised after a chlorine gas leak at the water treatment plant operated by the Godhani Gram Panchayat in Faghuji Layout, Godhani, late Sunday night. Residents in the surrounding area complained of breathing difficulties, eye irritation and discomfort after the gas spread into the locality.

The incident occurred around midnight, with local residents telling Nagpur Today that they first noticed a strong smell of gas between approximately 12 am and 12.30 am. As the gas spread, residents began experiencing breathing difficulties and irritation in their eyes. Police subsequently asked people living close to the plant to move to safer locations.

According to the latest reports, at least 52 people were taken to hospitals following exposure to the chlorine gas, although the final number of affected residents is still being assessed.

200-metre area evacuated

Following the leak, authorities evacuated and sealed an area of around 200 metres around the water treatment facility as a precautionary measure. Residents in the immediate vicinity were moved away from the affected zone while emergency teams worked to bring the situation under control.

An NDRF team reached the spot and joined the emergency response. Police, fire and health officials also remained involved in the operation. The presence of emergency teams helped restrict access to the affected area and prevent further exposure.

OCW team assists in controlling leak

The OCW team also played an important role in the leak-control operation. Team members Nitin and Kishore assisted the response teams while wearing Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) sets, allowing them to operate in the hazardous environment.

Their efforts in assisting with the emergency response were appreciated by the police and Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) teams present at the site.

Strong chlorine smell continued in the morning

Even after the immediate emergency response, a strong chlorine smell was reported around the plant in the morning. The impact appeared to be concentrated around the water treatment facility, while people farther away from the affected area continued their normal activities.

Nagpur Today’s ground report from Faghuji Layout also found the area sealed, with police and NDRF personnel present at the site.

Two stray dogs found dead

Two stray dogs were also found dead in the affected locality, according to visuals from the area. Videos circulating online have similarly shown dead stray dogs. However, there is currently no official confirmation establishing that their deaths were caused by chlorine exposure, and the cause of death will need to be determined separately.

Plant operated by Godhani Gram Panchayat

The water treatment facility involved in the incident is operated by the Godhani Gram Panchayat and is not an NMC-run plant.

Authorities are continuing to assess the situation, including the exact cause of the chlorine leak and the total number of people affected. Residents have been advised to stay away from the sealed area and follow instructions issued by the administration.
